Just as libraries did not replace universities, AI will not replace them either. It will, however, profoundly change how universities teach and what they teach.

Libraries never replaced the university because the university’s core is not access to information; it’s structured learning, mentorship, discussion, and the cultivation of judgment. Similarly, AI can provide massive knowledge, generate content, and assist learning—but it cannot replace the social, mentorship, and critical-thinking functions of a university. It changes how teaching and learning happen, not what the institution fundamentally is.
